You can stand on the rim of the volcano that buried Pompeii and look straight down into the crater. It takes about half a day, the walk itself is under an hour, and on a clear day the view runs from Naples across the whole bay to Capri. It is also, by a considerable margin, the most dangerous volcano on Earth — not because of what it does, but because of how many people live on it.
The Mountain That Killed Pompeii
Vesuvius is a somma-stratovolcano: the jagged ridge you see to the north, Monte Somma, is the remnant wall of a much older, larger cone. The younger cone of Vesuvius grew inside it. The valley between them, the Valle del Gigante, marks the scale of the earlier collapse.
The AD 79 eruption is the one everyone knows. It ejected a column of pumice and ash many kilometres high — the type of event now called Plinian, after Pliny the Younger, who watched it from across the bay and wrote the only eyewitness account we have. His uncle, Pliny the Elder, sailed toward the eruption to mount a rescue and died on the shore.
That column collapsed into the pyroclastic surges that destroyed Herculaneum and finished Pompeii. Recent work on inscriptions found at Pompeii has pushed the likely date from the traditional 24 August toward the autumn of AD 79 — supported by the autumn fruit and heavier clothing found at the sites.
It is not extinct. Vesuvius has erupted many times since, most recently in March 1944, during the Allied campaign in Italy — an eruption filmed by Allied airmen and which destroyed dozens of aircraft at a nearby airfield. It has been quiet since, which is not the same as safe. Roughly 600,000 people live inside the designated red zone, and the evacuation plan for it is one of the largest civil-protection undertakings in Europe.
The Crater Hike, Honestly Described
This is a well-managed tourist walk, not mountaineering — but it is not nothing.
- The road takes you most of the way. Vehicles reach a car park at roughly 1,000 m; the summit is about 1,281 m and changes slightly with eruptions.
- The walk is about 20–30 minutes each way up a broad switchback track of loose volcanic gravel. It is steep in places and the footing slides. Trainers are fine; sandals are not.
- Booking is required in advance for the Vesuvius National Park crater path, with timed entry. Turning up unbooked in season is a real risk.
- You walk part of the way around the rim, with the crater on one side — a grey, steaming bowl a few hundred metres across, with visible fumaroles — and the bay on the other.
- Weather closes it. Cloud, high wind or storms shut the path with no notice, and cloud can hide the entire view. Build a spare day in if the view is the point.
- Take water and sun cover. There is no shade above the car park.
Getting There
The usual approach is the Circumvesuviana train to Ercolano Scavi, then a dedicated shuttle bus up the mountain. This makes the obvious pairing a single day: Herculaneum in the morning, Vesuvius in the afternoon — the ruins and the cause, in that order, which is the right order.

What Pliny Actually Saw
Our only eyewitness account of the AD 79 eruption survives in two letters written by Pliny the Younger to the historian Tacitus, roughly twenty-five years after the event, and they remain among the most valuable documents in the history of science.
He describes the eruption column as resembling an umbrella pine — a trunk of ash rising vertically then spreading laterally at altitude. That is a precise description of what volcanologists now call a Plinian column, in which the plume rises by thermal buoyancy until it reaches a level where the surrounding atmosphere has equal density, then flattens out. Modern estimates put the AD 79 column at roughly 30 kilometres high, with material ejected at a rate measured in tonnes per second.
He also records details that map onto known volcanic phenomena: the sea withdrawing from the shore, ground shaking, the sky darker than any night, ash falling so thickly that people had to shake it off to avoid being buried, and the pumice that fell on his uncle’s rescue party. Pliny the Elder — naturalist, admiral, author of the Natural History — crossed the bay to evacuate people and died on the shore at Stabiae, most probably of asphyxiation or a cardiac event rather than burns, since his body was recovered intact.
The column’s eventual collapse produced the pyroclastic density currents that killed Herculaneum and finished Pompeii. That two-stage sequence — sustained fallout, then collapse into ground-hugging surges — is the standard model of a Plinian eruption, and it was written down for the first time by a teenager watching from Misenum.
The Eruptions After the Famous One
Vesuvius did not stop in AD 79, and the record matters for understanding the risk today.
- 1631 — the deadliest historical eruption after AD 79, killing several thousand people and ending a long dormant period. It reshaped how the region understood the mountain.
- 1872, 1906, 1929 — a sequence of significant eruptions during a period when Vesuvius was more or less permanently active, with a persistent summit cone and frequent lava flows. This is the Vesuvius of 19th-century paintings and early photographs.
- March 1944 — the last eruption. It destroyed several villages, killed dozens, and famously wrecked around 80 B-25 bombers of the USAAF at a nearby airfield when hot ash burned through their fabric control surfaces. It was filmed extensively by Allied personnel.
Since 1944 the volcano has been in a closed-conduit state — quiet, with the vent plugged. Volcanologists generally regard prolonged repose at Vesuvius as raising, not lowering, the likely violence of the next event, because pressure and gas accumulate. It is monitored continuously by the Osservatorio Vesuviano, founded in 1841 and the oldest volcano observatory in the world.
The Red Zone
The reason Vesuvius is routinely called the most dangerous volcano on Earth has nothing to do with its size — it is far from the largest — and everything to do with what has been built on it. Roughly 600,000 people live in the designated zona rossa, the area at risk of pyroclastic flows, with millions more in the wider metropolitan area of Naples.
