Malta’s Cart Ruts: The Bronze Age Grooves Nobody Can Fully Explain

Across the limestone of Malta and Gozo run thousands of parallel grooves, cut into solid bedrock, converging and crossing and occasionally running straight off a cliff edge or down into the sea. They are called cart ruts. Nobody has satisfactorily dated them, nobody fully agrees what made them, and the most-photographed concentration — a plateau near Dingli where dozens of pairs braid together — was nicknamed Clapham Junction by the archaeologist David Trump, after the tangle of rails at the London station.

They are one of the genuinely open questions in Mediterranean archaeology. They are also a magnet for claims that outrun the evidence. This is what is actually known.

What They Physically Are

The formal name of the main site is MisraĦ GĦar il-Kbir, on a plateau in Siġġiewi near the Dingli Cliffs.

  • The ruts run in pairs of parallel channels cut into the exposed globigerina limestone.
  • At MisraĦ GĦar il-Kbir they reach up to 60 cm deep.
  • The gauge — the distance between the two channels — averages roughly 110 to 140 cm. That consistency matters: it points to a repeated vehicle or sled of standardised width rather than random erosion.
  • They cross and merge in dense networks, sometimes with one pair cutting cleanly through another — which tells us they were not all made at once.
  • Some run to the edge of cliffs and stop. Some continue underwater.

The Dating Problem

Here is the core difficulty: you cannot radiocarbon-date a groove in rock. There is no organic material in a rut. Dating has to come from stratigraphic relationships — what cuts what — and from where the ruts lead. That leaves a wide bracket, and published estimates have ranged from the Neolithic to the medieval period.

The evidence that actually constrains it:

  • Punic tombs cut through some rut pairs. This is the single most useful data point. If a Phoenician-Punic rock-cut tomb slices across a rut, the rut was already there — and had already stopped mattering — by that period. It sets a terminus ante quem of roughly the mid-first millennium BC.
  • Some ruts run up to the entrances of Bronze Age villages. On this basis David Trump placed them in the Later Bronze Age, which remains the most widely held mainstream position.
  • Others argue for the Temple Period (roughly 3800–2500 BC), linking them to the movement of megaliths.
  • The Maltese archaeologist Anthony Bonanno has argued for a Phoenician context.

The honest summary: a Bronze Age date is the mainstream reading, a Temple Period date is defensible for some ruts, and the network almost certainly accumulated over a long span rather than in one phase.

What Made Them?

Two families of explanation, and they are not mutually exclusive.

1. Wear from repeated transport

The dominant view. Sustained passage of a heavy vehicle over the same line will cut soft limestone — and research published in 2008 modelled exactly this, with wooden-wheeled carts eroding the rock. The likely vehicle is debated: wheeled carts, sledges, or the “slide-car” — two shafts dragged by an animal with the load slung between them, a technology documented ethnographically in other parts of Europe. Malta’s limestone is soft when freshly exposed and hardens on weathering, which makes it unusually susceptible.

2. Deliberate cutting

A minority position holds that at least some channels were carved on purpose — proposed variously as guides for transport, or as part of soil and water retention on a landscape where topsoil is scarce and precious. The regularity of gauge is cited in support.

What they were carrying is likewise unresolved: quarried stone for the temples, agricultural soil moved uphill, or ordinary goods. The routes do not consistently connect quarries to temples, which weakens the simplest version of the megalith-hauling story.

The Underwater Ruts, and What They Do Not Prove

This is where the topic gets contentious, and it is worth being precise.

The observation is real. Cart ruts continue below the waterline in several places, notably in St George’s Bay at Birżebbuġa, where pairs run down the shore and into shallow water. They were plainly cut when that ground was dry land.

The inference some draw is that this requires enormous antiquity — that sea level must have been dramatically lower, pushing the ruts back to the last Ice Age and implying a lost civilisation far older than the accepted record.

Why that does not follow. Mediterranean sea level has continued to rise, and local land levels have shifted, well into the historical period. Geological assessment indicates that sea-level change within roughly the last two thousand years is sufficient to account for the submergence — no Ice Age required. Malta also sits in a tectonically active region where localised subsidence contributes. A submerged rut tells you the coastline moved; it does not tell you by how much, or when, without independent dating.

So: the underwater ruts are genuinely striking, genuinely worth seeing, and entirely compatible with a Bronze Age date. Claims that they prove an Ice Age civilisation are not supported by the geology, and you will encounter them stated with great confidence online.

Where to See Them

  • MisraĦ GĦar il-Kbir (“Clapham Junction”), Siġġiewi, near the Dingli Cliffs — the densest and most impressive concentration. It is open, free and unfenced, on rough garigue terrain. There is no visitor centre and minimal signage; wear proper shoes and go in good light, because low sun raking across the plateau reveals the channels far better than midday glare.
  • St George’s Bay, Birżebbuġa — for the submerged ruts running into the water.
  • Near Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra — ruts run through this landscape too, which is why they are best combined with a temple visit.
  • Ta’ Ħaġrat and San Pawl tat-Tarġa — further accessible groups.
