The Myth: Calypso and Ogygia
Shipwrecked and having lost every one of his men, Odysseus washes up on Ogygia, the island of the beautiful nymph Calypso, who keeps him for seven years and offers him immortality if he will stay. He refuses, pining for Ithaca and his wife Penelope, and at last the gods order Calypso to release him. It is the emotional heart of the poem — the hero choosing a mortal home over eternal ease.
The island of Ogygia is traditionally identified with Gozo. According to VisitMalta, a cave above the glorious red-sand beach of Ramla Bay is believed to be the very cave described by Homer, and is known to this day as Calypso’s Cave.
Whether or not Homer ever knew Gozo, the view from the headland — a lone figure could gaze out to sea for years here — makes the identification irresistibly poetic.

This matters, because plenty of listings still imply otherwise. You cannot go inside Calypso’s Cave. The interior has been shut on safety grounds — the rock is unstable and the old internal stairway is disused. What exists today is a clifftop viewpoint over Ramla Bay, which is free, genuinely beautiful, and takes about ten minutes. Even the viewing deck has occasionally been closed, so check locally. Come for the view and the association, not for a cave interior, and you won’t be disappointed.

- Ramla l-Ħamra means “red sand,” and it earns the name — the beach below the cave is genuinely rust-orange, unusual in the Mediterranean.
- Ġgantija is the real headline on this island. The temples just outside Xagĥra, minutes from the Calypso viewpoint, were built around 3600–3200 BC — over 5,500 years old, roughly a thousand years older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids, and among the oldest free-standing structures on Earth.
- Some Ġgantija blocks weigh over 50 tonnes, moved by people without metal tools. UNESCO listed the site in 1980, extended in 1992 as part of the Megalithic Temples of Malta.
- Ogygia is tradition, not evidence. The Gozo identification is a literary attribution of long standing — there is no archaeology tying this cave to the Odyssey. Enjoy it as the place the story settled, not as a findspot.
Practical Details
- The ferry: Ċirkewwa (Malta) to Mġarr (Gozo) takes about 25 minutes, running roughly every 30 minutes in daytime.
- You pay on the way back. The Gozo Channel fare is collected only on the Gozo→Malta leg — about €4.65 return on foot, €15.70 with a car.
- Cluster it: Ġgantija, the Calypso viewpoint and Ramla Bay all sit within minutes of Xagĥra — an easy, excellent half-day. Ġgantija is ticketed via Heritage Malta.
- Best season: late April–June and September–October.
